How Our New Runner Created The Perfect Amount Of Texture

Let me tell you a little secret, one that a lot of designers won’t say to your face….YOU NEED MORE TEXTURE! Neutral spaces are the new “black” (so to speak) and texture is what we use in these neutral spaces to create depth, dimension, and body to your space. It’s like adding really good product to your hair…it shows off your cut, your color, and the body of your hair. Weird comparison I know but it was the only thing I could think of! haha.

People often get overwhelmed when trying to figure out where and how to add texture but let me make it way easier for you. There are 4 different (and super easy) ways that I like to add texture to my spaces.

  1. Rugs (whether that’s an area rug, runner or small rug). I love using rugs to create a statement in these neutral spaces. They hold so much character and can draw in so many different features of a room.

  2. Throw pillows. One thing I have been loving lately is buying pillow covers in all the same (or similar) color/tone but making sure that they are all different textures. This creates sustenance and dimension to your space while not making it look or feel uniform but more organic and still put together.

  3. Greenery. I love using either real or faux plants to add height and depth to my spaces. I feel like every time I do this it adds so much life to the spaces they’re in. I love the use of ceramic pottery vases with the plants too, that adds additional texture to the space as well.

  4. Curtains. You can even use a color curtain that matches your walls and it adds texture which is what I love seeing the most in these neutral spaces. Curtains add a warmth and coziness to the spaces that they’re in; softening any hard lines and rounding out the room.

How Our New Runner Created The Perfect Amount Of Texture

Here is how I used my new vintage runner to add texture to my neutral entryway space:

BEFORE

AFTER

THIS RUG made such a difference in this space and I had to do nothing else! That is the power of texture. And not to say that I didn’t like the runner from the before picture but as you can see it didn’t do much for the space either. It was neutral and sorta blended in with the floors. While the new rug made the space pop and added dimension, character, and purpose. It made every other element of this area tie together perfectly. And that’s what you want when you’re adding texture to your space. You want it to add another layer to your space that wasn’t there before while still adding purpose and functionality.
