Dark Bedroom Vibes: A Designers Honest Review

We painted our bedroom DARK GREEN! And if I’m being totally honest…it took me a solid WEEK before I felt confident in keeping the bedroom that color. Rolling the first coat on had freaking out. If you’ve ever painted a white room dark you will probably understand this feeling. I instantly regretted my choice but made myself push through.

And I’m soooooo glad that I did because I am IN love! Everyone always tells you, never paint a small room a dark color because it makes the room feel even smaller and I’m not going to lie, as a designer, I have told many clients that myself. But there is something magical about dark, high gloss paint that is just hard to explain.

The dark moody tones of the paint make way for a cozy and intimate vibe, while the high reflective nature of the high gloss finish adds depth and dimension to the space; taking away that “shrinking” feeling. I don’t know, something truly magical happens when you go bold and if I’m being honest…I’m thinking of going bold in many more rooms of both my home and in our clients homes. Here are a couple more shots to really make you drool.

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE RUGS!

If you’ve been debating on whether or not to go dark, here are a few things to consider:

  1. What kind of lighting do you get in that specific room? The better the natural light, the better you will feel. Trust me! You can go dark and still feel like it’s way too dark if you don’t have enough natural light streaming in. This will also help with that “shrinking” feeling I talked about before.

  2. The bolder you go the “moodier” you’re room will feel. You can go “bold” without going “booolllddd.” If you’re really wanting to go for that vintage, high end, moody feeling then I would highly recommend you go ALL out and paint your entire room. Otherwise if you are thinking of just dabbling, and want a bold accent, then consider painting just one wall in your room.

  3. The kind of finish you use is very important factor to consider. If you go too matte looking, your space will feel flat. But the glossier you go, the more reflective and classy your space will feel. Again, helping to take away that “shrinking” feeling.

  4. What will your accent pieces be. I’d highly advise to keep your accents as light as possible to keep them from getting lost against the dark walls. That doesn’t mean you need to do white accents by any means just lighter toned finishes will help your room pop that much more.

I hope this was helpful to those of you thinking about going dark! And most of all, have fun with it! Get lots of samples and paint them on your wall to begin so you can see what each color looks like with your natural light throughout the day. This will largely help in your decision process, trust me!
