Why We Redid Our Hardwood Floors 2 Years Later

Yes, it’s true…after just over two years of having refinished our floors we decided to jump head first into the tedious task once more to get our floors JUST how we wanted them. But WHY did we have to refinish them in the first place we have gotten asked a few times and while we liked the stain choice we had before and it matched the trim we weren’t “in love” with it. There were a few factors that played into our decision to refinish our hardwood floors (once again) like for instance:

  • The fact that the dining room floor finish was coming completely off.

Why We Redid Our Hardwood Floors 2 Years Later

There are a few things we didn’t do completely correct the first time around when we refinished these floors and while this probably could have been preserved a bit longer with the proper furniture padding, we weren’t proactive enough to keep this damage from occurring in our dining room. It was getting to the point that anytime water touched the floor it was seeping into the exposed wood. That was a big sign we needed to act fast.

  • The house was so dark in many places

This house was built in the 1920s and so there is VERY minimal lighting throughout. Two of our main seating areas (where we spend the majority of our time; our TV room/playroom and our front room) have very minimal lighting access. We literally have to use lamps everywhere (which if you have this same problem you know of annoying it can be). So throughout most of the day those rooms are kept incredibly dark. It doesn’t help that they are both on the north side of our house, which gets the least amount of natural light throughout the day. The flooring was a huge factor in this as well. With the flooring being a darker stain it made the whole room feel darker as well. We knew lighter floors could really help us to brighten up those darker areas.

  • We want the floors to be set apart from the thick beautiful trim

The trim in this house is a work of art in and of itself and it just felt like with the floor being the same color as the trim it all just kind of blended together and nothing was truly set apart. This was a big way for us to really contrast these two beautiful qualities in this home while implementing a style that I’ve been dying to explore.

  • The dark floor showed allllllllllllll the dirt/dust/and crumbs

It’s no secret that dark floors bring out the dirt and dust that settles on the floor but when you’ve got a huge house, full of kids, spilling food all the time …this. is. an. issue! Both Guy and I have the curse of being perfectionists and having to look at crumbs and dirt all the time literally drove us crazy. These lighter floors hide so much and it makes Iife so much simpler with kiddos.

  • It fit the style and trend we want for this space

If you didn’t already know, Guy and I are working on a fun new project series, showing how we are transitioning our farmhouse styled home into a bit more midcentury modern. We see this house as being such a perfect canvas for that style with all the wood tones we have and so we really want to build off of that. You can check out the beginning of that series [HERE].

As always, thanks for stopping by. Guy and I strive to help all of you in your DIY endeavors and while we’re not perfect we sure do hope you can learn a thing or two from us! Stay tuned for the second part of our series “Transitioning From Farmhouse To Mid-Century Modern” coming soon and if you haven’t, sign up for our newsletter to get special news and insights each month!
