How To Facelift Your Kitchen Like a Designer

If you are someone that needs to give your kitchen a facelift but don’t know where to begin, or someone that needs a good ol’ checklist to know where to begin, then this post is for you! Guy & I have remodeled and “facelifted” 12 kitchens and counting so far and we know the feelings of overwhelm that can come when thinking about where to start on a project like this. There are sooooo many components that go into making over a kitchen that it can be intimidating to know where to even begin or what to even focus on.

But I’m here to assure you that you don’t need to be a design expert to take charge in this arena. All you need are a few simple tips on where to begin and what to focus on. Here is a simple checklist to get you started on your kitchen facelift:

  • Create a color palette

    • You don’t need to be a genius to know that paint can literally change the entire look and feel of any space. So USE that knowledge to your advantage. Create a color palette from your favorite instagram account to start. What do I mean by this?

        • Take a screen shot of your favorite instagram accounts feed

        • Take that picture over to your stories and use the color tool to drag your toggle around to the color that you love. Once you have a color picked out, release your finger and then tap and down on your screen and wait for your background to be encompassed in that color. Then take a screen shot of that picture.

        • Repeat this step until you have 4-5 colors picked out.

    • Pick 2-3 colors to be your “core colors” (like black, white, and wood tones). These core colors will be what you build the rest of your design off of, while all of the other colors you’ve chosen can be your accent tones that you pull in with other design elements. (You can find a video tutorial walking you through this below).

  • Create a moodboard

    1. (I use the Canva app) to collect all the pictures that are inspiring you in a specific space. And put them in a collage. Look at them, study them, and pin-point the common themes in each of them. Then pinpoint the specific elements that you really love about each one. You could love the lights in one picture, the hardware in another, and the color of cabinets in the next. Use those elements to create another (even more customized) moodboard to narrow down what you will be searching for.

  • Create a budget.

    1. Stick to it. This makes picking out products a lot more simplified because you know where you can splurge and where you might need to pull back. You may really like a certain pendant light but it could be WAY out of budget. The advantage we have now a days is there are so many dupes (think decor doppelgängers) out there that will fit your dream item.

Here is a more focused list of exact items that I believe will give you the best “bang for your buck” in a kitchen facelift:

    1. Paint

    2. Light fixtures

    3. Hardware

    4. Tile (backsplash, flooring, etc)

    5. Textiles (rugs, pillows, curtains, etc)
