The “Green Tile Bathroom” Plan & Color Story

If you missed the full tour of the 1920s English Tudor we bought last year to renovate you can find that over on this blog post!

The story behind this big beautiful home goes a little something like this….we found out this old 1920s English Tudor in the heart of the University of Illinois’ campus (nicknamed “Professor’s Drive” because a lot of professors bought and built the most beautiful homes on this stretch of property conveniently located within walking distance to their offices and classrooms) was being sold off market for a crazy low price because the upstairs bathroom had a pipe burst in it while the home was unoccupied. This caused an enormous amount of damage throughout the plaster work, woodwork, and flooring that many saw as unsalvageable.

But NOT US!!! We took one look at this home and couldn’t wait to get our hands on it!

But what about that bathroom that had the pipe burst in it? Well this it folks…

I wanted so badly to keep the original green tile because it was so beautiful and I loved how much character it possessed. But because of the busted pipe issue AND the fact that the shower structure could only fit a 5 foot person we had to demo the entire space and start over. Yes there were some tears over this decision but if there’s one thing we’ve learned from renovating houses it’s that you just have to roll with the punches and not become too attached to….ANYTHING.

Even though the “original” tile of this space no longer exists, it doesn’t mean that we can’t recreate it while putting our own personal spin on it! So that’s what we’re doing! We’ve chosen to do a 6x6 tile in the colors white & “succulent green” in a checkerboard pattern for the shower walls. And for the floors we are doing 1” mosaic hexagon tiles in a fun black and white pattern. You can find our color board below for all our inspiration for this space.
